Student Success Stories From Parents

Stephen and Rebecca Peters' Story by Robbie Peters

I am a parent of two former Reading Recovery students and I just wanted you to know about their wonderful experience with Reading Recovery.

My son, Stephen, is in the 11th grade now and he had a wonderful teacher named Joy Ballenger to teach him in Reading Recovery. He really struggled with reading and we worked very hard at home but it just wasn't enough. He would come to a word that he didn't know how to read and he would just give up, but after 6 weeks with Mrs. Ballenger he was reading with confidence and no word or sentence was too much for him. Today he is an A student and I am very pleased with his educational choices. I feel he would never have done as well in school if he had not had the opportunity to take Reading Recovery.

Also, my daughter, Rebecca, was in Reading Recovery and she worked with Pam Johnson. Rebecca really struggled to learn, but with love and patience from Mrs. Johnson she blossomed and became a fine reader. Rebecca is in the 10th grade and a straight-A student.

In my opinion, schools need Reading Recovery and the loving, patient people who do this job. Reading Recovery boosts self-esteem and puts pride in children who ordinarily wouldn't have it because of being ashamed they can't read. We need to highlight the benefits to literacy that Reading Recovery supplies.
