Student Success Stories From Parents
Chloe Warren's Story by Steve Warren
My
wife, Ellen Borchers, our daughter, Chloe Warren, and I,
Steve Warren, were very happy with Reading Recovery at PS
290, New York City.
Chloe was behind in reading. When we heard that Chloe was
going to be in Reading Recovery we were very excited. She
was having a hard time focusing in a group/class situation.
Chloe was easily distracted. PS 290 can have as many as 32
students per class. Most of the classes have assistant
teachers, but it's still hard to teach that many kids. Chloe
was pulled out of class on a regular basis and taught to
read in a one on one setting, which was a wonderful
opportunity.
Reading Recovery was a very personal and rewarding
experience for us. Chloe's instructor, Beth Kufeld, was very
patient with Chloe and kept me informed on their work. It
was fantastic to see Chloe flourish and improve with Beth.
We knew it sometimes took a lot of patience and diligence to
help Chloe. Beth and I used to go over Chloe's progress and
personal quirks and that really helped because Chloe knew
Beth would tell me if she wasn't paying attention. We
sympathized with Beth because we understood how hard it was
to get Chloe to pay attention.
Before Reading Recovery our school warned us that Chloe
would not be promoted to second grade if she didn't improve.
Chloe made so much progress with Reading Recovery that she
graduated to second grade.
Chloe began Reading Recovery with a reading grade of
"under grade level" but soared to finish "at grade level.”
Chloe's self esteem was also boosted. A great teacher can
change a child's life by teaching him or her to read.
