Student Success Stories From Parents

Charlie Pryor's Story by Brad & Kris Pryor

Charlie is a normal, active second grader at Fort Daniel Elementary in Dacula, Georgia and today, thanks to Reading Recovery, is a great reader. But reading didn't come easy for him. He struggled with the concept from the very beginning. At the end of kindergarten, he was reading below grade level and we were wondering what we were going to do to help him.

His first-grade teacher noticed the problem right away and immediately recommended to the school administration that he be part of the Reading Recovery program. We had never heard of this program, but my wife and I are both avid readers. We were willing to try anything to help give Charlie the gift of reading. So at the recommendation of the school, we allowed Charlie to participate in this program.

His Reading Recovery teacher, Cindy Kubal, was absolutely amazing. She made us an integral part of the process from day one. Every day, she would meet with Charlie and teach him the skills necessary to become a great reader. And every night, we sat with Charlie and practiced the skills she taught us. Today, thanks to Reading Recovery, Charlie is reading above grade level and is well on his way to a life of reading.

But there are still so many children that struggle with reading – children who would greatly benefit from the techniques and the one-on-one attention Reading Recovery teachers provide. The success has been proven and every child deserves a chance.
