Write for The Journal of Reading Recovery

NEW! Online Manuscript Tracking System
Read More About Our New Submission Process Below

Every Reading Recovery teacher, teacher leader, administrator, site coordinator, and parent has a good story to tell. Please consider sharing your Reading Recovery experiences, ideas, and surprises by writing for The Journal of Reading Recovery (JRR). We need to hear from you because readers have told us they want to hear more about people like themselves—especially those on the front lines working with children.

Blind Peer Review Process
The Journal of Reading Recovery is a peer-reviewed and refereed publication published by the Reading Recovery Council of North America (RRCNA). All submitted manuscripts will be read by the editors to determine suitability for publication. Authors will receive an acknowledgement when the submission is received and will be notified via email of the editors’ decisions.

JRR uses a blind review process. The article will be sent to the appropriate section editor, who will monitor a peer review process by a team of reviewers. The section editor will then:

  • accept the article as submitted
  • return the article for revisions – with clear directions from the reviewers – for publication as edited
  • return the article for re-working – with directions and feedback from the reviewers – with the suggestion to resubmit for consideration and no guarantee of acceptance
  • return the rejected article

Editors will send authors feedback from reviewers and, if necessary, specific suggestions for revision.

If accepted, your article will again be reviewed by the section editor and the editor-in-chief. The publications manager will complete a technical edit and authors will be contacted with additional questions. A pdf file of the final article will be electronically sent to you for final approval, along with an assignment of copyright form, which must be returned prior to publication.

Guidelines for JRR Authors

  1. Select a topic of interest to our Reading Recovery audience.
  2. Write clearly, concisely, and use an active voice.
  3. Be sure the message is clear and has a consistent focus throughout.
  4. Include dialogue or samples of children’s work when possible. (see JRR Photo and Artwork Requirements)
  5. Send either long or short articles. Published length ranges from two- and three-sentence anecdotes to longer, more technical articles. (see Submit Manuscript to Online System and Submit Feature Items below)
  6. Articles will be edited to fit space and style requirements.
  7. RRCNA publications follow the style designated by the Publications Manual of the American Psychological Association, 5th edition.
  8. The RRCNA Style Manual provides additional guidance for authors.

NEW! How to Submit Manuscripts for JRR
Manuscripts must be submitted via the JRR online manuscript submission and review system powered by eJournalPress. This user-friendly system will allow you to check the progress of your manuscript throughout the review process. Click on Author Instructions on the system homepage for easy-to-follow steps to set up your account and upload your electronic files to the web-based system.

IMPORTANT! Since our journal manuscript submission and reveiw process is now totally web-based, all emails generated by the tracking system will come from a web address which may not be recognized or accepted by your email servers. In order to use the tracking system and ensure you receive all correspondence, you will need to add the following domain names to your email whitelist. If you use a university-based email system, ask your IT department to add these domain names to the mail server whitelist: ejpress.com and msubmit.net.

Please follow the most-recent APA style guidelines. Manuscripts must be double-spaced, should be no more than 30 pages (excluding reference list, tables and figures), and must be accompanied by an abstract of no more than 250 words. No identification of the author(s) and affiliations should appear anywhere in the manuscript, including running headers and footers. Do not embed tables and figures within the manuscript itself. Each supporting graphic must be uploaded as a separate file.
