Speaker Bios
Shannon Henderson
Professor Shannon C. Henderson is the associate director of the
Center for Literacy Education and Research (CLEAR) and an assistant
professor of literacy and language education at Purdue University.
Professor Henderson’s research interests include the exploration of
the role of teacher responsivity in reading instruction with
particular emphasis on facilitating comprehension through
instructional conversations. She is a Reading Recovery Trainer and
has worked as a professional educator for more than fifteen years
conducting workshops and making research presentations at the local,
state, national, and international levels on topics such as literacy
processing, vocabulary instruction, comprehension, literacy
interventions, and the professional development of teachers.
Janet Bufalino
Janet Bufalino began her career in literacy as a Title 1 teacher
near Erie, PA. During her years as a reading specialist, she
supported children in grades K-6. Following the completion of her
doctorate in Language Arts, Dr. Bufalino accepted a position at
Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania in 1993. The position
required her to relocate to Columbus, OH to train to become a
Reading Recovery Trainer. As the trainer for Shippensburg
University, Janet works with teacher training sites in Maryland,
Virginia, West Virginia and of course, Pennsylvania. During
Presently Dr. Janet Bufalino is coordinating the Pennsylvania State
of Education’s Reading Recovery Initiative. The focus of the
initiative is to implement Reading Recovery in Elementary Schools
across Pennsylvania that have not met AYP. |
