Williamsport Area School District
Williamsport, Pennsylvania
The Williamsport Area School District is implementing its 14th year
as a Reading Recovery teacher training site. The site serves
students in 13 school districts that include urban, rural, and
suburban areas in north central Pennsylvania. In addition to the
Williamsport Area schools, the site trains teachers from the Muncy,
Shikellamy, Mifflinburg, Sullivan County, Bald Eagle, Mountain View
Area, Shamokin, Berwick, Benton Area, Danville Area, Galeton, and
Montgomery school districts.
During 13 years as a training site, the 60 Reading Recovery teachers
trained through the Williamsport site have taught 2,661 students. An
additional 53 teachers have received professional development in
guided reading, literacy at the early acquisition stage, and
intervention. Dr. Debbie Grove, Reading Recovery site coordinator
and Title I supervisor, initiated this professional development in
order to align literacy theory used in classrooms and interventions.
Williamsport Area School District offers the intervention at five
elementary schools: J. Henry Cochran , Stevens, Andrew Jackson,
Round Hills, and St. John Neumann Regional Academy. The student
population in Williamsport is diverse. More than 80% of Reading
Recovery students are eligible for the free or reduced-price lunch
program. Reading Recovery teachers in the Williamsport Area School
District have served 1,045 students in Reading Recovery and
thousands more children in small literacy groups or classrooms.
Reading Recovery teachers are a strong literacy resource for other
teachers in their schools.
Williamsport Area also has four Literacy Collaborative
coordinators at two elementary schools, and many classroom teachers
from other elementary schools in the district are also being trained
by the Literacy Collaborative coordinators.
Since this training site was founded, Dr. Grove and teacher
leader Charlotte Allgeier have provided consistent leadership. A new
teacher leader, Jackie White, is currently being trained at
Shippensburg University by Dr. Janet Bufalino. Four superintendents
at Williamsport Area have served during Reading Recovery’s 13-year
implementation. All have supported Reading Recovery, including
present superintendent Dr. Kathleen R. Kelly. The district is
affiliated with the Williamsport Reading Recovery Training Site and
Shippensburg University Training Center in Shippensburg, PA.

Stevens Elementary School houses Reading
Recovery professional development for 13
school districts in Pennsylvania.

Isaiah is one of many students who
successfully
completed Reading Recovery lessons on 2008-
2009.

Reading Recovery teachers, classroom
teachers,
guided-reading teachers and IST teachers form
school teams and have professional development
to align classroom and Reading Recovery intervention
theory. Many are trained in Reading Recovery, Literacy
Lessons, and Literacy Collaborative.
